Alia Tyner-Mullings’ remarks to Better World Awards on December 11th 2016
Thank you for coming to support the paper.
In times like this we need a paper like the People’s World to be our voice. It has been our voice since 1924 when it first was printed as the Daily Worker.
I was just telling my Dad in the car about some of my memories sitting here late at night, wrapping the paper when we used to mail it in those little tubes. I remember sitting there, wrapping them, and putting the labels on. It was actually a lot of fun. It was sort of like good family time.
And then additional family time when we would do the picnics upstate – I have very strong memories of that. I’m going to assume that they’re going to happen again at some point, so that I can take my daughter there, and she can also appreciate the community that we have here.
I think it’s important that – as Zenaida said – we are all supportive of each other. We are all here to protect and embrace each other. This paper provides us with the opportunity to do that through our voices. Being here, we can do that in person. We want to keep that in mind today, and keep that in mind as we prepare for this fight.
